The Jewish Quarter: Memory and History
Josefov is one of the most important Jewish heritage sites in Europe, and it’s also one of the places where I feel the weight of guiding most strongly. I hold a special certification for this area, and I take the responsibility seriously — both the history and the way it’s told.
What to See
- Pinkas Synagogue: the walls are inscribed with the names of over 77,000 Bohemian and Moravian Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Nothing prepares you for the scale of it.
- Old-New Synagogue: Europe’s oldest active synagogue, built around 1270. Still in use today.
- The Old Jewish Cemetery: burials stacked twelve deep over centuries. The crowded tombstones are not a design choice — they reflect a community that ran out of space.
